3 AMD FSR 4 improvements

By Aayush

With the launch of the AMD Radeon RX 9070, AMD is also introducing FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4), bringing exclusive features tailored for its latest graphics cards. The biggest breakthrough is the integration of AI-driven enhancements, utilizing machine learning and neural rendering to significantly improve image quality.

This marks a major shift for AMD, as the company will now employ custom AI models trained using Instinct accelerators—a technique Nvidia has been leveraging since the first iteration of DLSS. Over the past six years, Nvidia has continuously refined its AI-powered upscaling, thanks to its cutting-edge AI-focused GPUs. Now, AMD is taking a similar approach to enhance gaming visuals and performance.

However, AI-driven upscaling is just one of three key improvements in FSR 4. Here’s a breakdown of all the major upgrades.

3. Upscaling And Frame Generator Via Ai

This marks the biggest and most important change in AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4). Instead of relying on an open-source algorithm that manipulates pixels to enhance images, FSR 4 will now use AI-driven upscaling and AI-generated frames to deliver superior visual fidelity.

By integrating neural network-trained AI models, AMD ensures continuous improvements in image quality. These models are constantly learning, identifying bugs, correcting errors, and refining their output in real-time. As a result, upscaling will produce sharper, more detailed graphics, while AI-generated frames will exhibit fewer artifacts and anomalies, ultimately enhancing both visual quality and performance.

2. Easy implementation

According to AMD, FSR 4 is built on top of the FSR 3.1 API, making its implementation more streamlined for game developers. This approach simplifies integration, ensuring that more titles can take advantage of the technology with minimal effort.

At launch, over 30 games will support FSR 4, including several Sony titles, such as the Horizon franchise, The Last of Us Part I, the Spider-Man franchise, and God of War: Ragnarok. Additionally, newer releases like Space Marine 2 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will also feature support.

Looking ahead, AMD has committed to expanding FSR 4 adoption, with over 75 games expected to receive the technology by 2025.

1. Big performance leap

The primary goal of upscale and frame generation technologies is to boost gaming performance without compromising image quality. With FSR 4, AMD takes this even further by leveraging AI-driven enhancements for superior upscaling and frame generation.

According to AMD’s internal tests, the Radeon RX 9070 XT, a high-end RDNA 4 GPU, achieves a 3.7x performance increase in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart with FSR 4—jumping from 38 FPS to 142 FPS at 4K with ray tracing enabled. Across multiple tested titles, AMD reports that even the smallest performance gain is 2.1x compared to native 4K rendering.

The key driver behind this massive boost is FSR 4’s AI-powered frame generation. While the upscaler alone can double frame rates, the frame generator further enhances RDNA 4 GPUs, significantly improving performance.

However, it’s important to note that FSR 4’s full benefits will be exclusive to AMD Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs, as the technology has been specifically optimized for the new RDNA 4 architecture.
