Google has strongly emphasized the AI capabilities of the new Pixel 9 line, which was announced at the Made by Google event. Beyond enhancing the Gemini assistant, Google introduced exclusive AI-driven features to these new smartphones.
These features include a new app that allows users to search for information in old screenshots, advanced photo editing tools, and new call recording features. These enhancements are available across the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Fold models, all equipped with Tensor G4 chips.
New AI features in the Google Pixel 9 lineup
1. Search old prints
The Pixel Screenshots app aims to organize and make finding specific information within your saved screenshots easy. It uses AI to analyze the text in each screenshot, allowing you to search using natural language. For example, ask, “What is the security code I received?”
Google hasn’t provided extensive details about the privacy aspects of this feature, but the data will likely be stored locally on your device, thanks to the Gemini Nano model. This model processes the information directly on the device itself. Unlike Microsoft’s Recall, which automatically captures screenshots, Google’s approach provides users more control over their screenshots.
2. Call Summary
The Call Notes feature is designed to record and summarize phone calls longer than 30 seconds. The transcripts and summaries are saved in the system’s folders, making it easier to locate and review key information from your conversations.
It’s worth noting that Samsung and Apple also offer similar features within their phone apps.
3. Add people to photos
The Pixel 9 line introduces new camera features, including “Add Me,” which lets you add people to a group photo even if they weren’t in the original shot. You can simply take another photo and have the AI merge the two images into one.
The camera also features an “Auto Frame” function, which helps you position your face perfectly for selfies. Additionally, an accessibility feature uses the camera lenses to identify text and search for specific words within an image.
4. App to generate images
The Pixel Studio app leverages Google’s Imagen3 model to create images directly on your phone. While the Gemini assistant also offers this functionality, the app is particularly noted for its ability to generate stickers, edit the style of an image, and add captions.
Similarly, Apple has introduced a tool called Image Kitchen for Apple Intelligence. This tool can quickly create images and even use contacts’ faces stored in the address book.
5. Weather summaries
The Pixel Weather app simplifies deciding whether you need an umbrella before heading out. It utilizes AI to generate quick daily weather summaries, eliminating the need to sift through extensive forecast data. Additionally, it offers more precise information, such as the expected timing of rainfall.
