AMD confirms launch of RDNA 4 GPUs for early 2025

In a recent meeting with shareholders, AMD confirmed that its next-generation RDNA 4 GPUs will be released in early 2025. This announcement came indirectly rather than through the typical public press release.

AMD CEO Lisa Su addressed the company’s gaming GPU revenue, acknowledging a year-over-year decline without giving exact figures. Despite this downturn, Su emphasized AMD’s ongoing commitment to advancing its GPU technology and assured shareholders that RDNA 4 is actively developing.

This move positions AMD as the first to officially confirm its upcoming GPU lineup, even as NVIDIA has yet to officially announce its GeForce RTX 50 series. By stepping forward with a timeline, AMD aims to reassure the market and its investors of its dedication to the gaming GPU sector and its plans to remain competitive as it transitions to the next generation of graphics chips.

Radeon RX 8000 will have greater ray tracing capabilities.

Lisa Su also confirmed that RDNA 4 graphics cards are set to substantially boost gaming performance, particularly in areas where Radeon GPUs have traditionally lagged behind. She highlighted that the new generation will bring significant advancements in ray tracing—an area where AMD has been working to catch up with NVIDIA’s lead. Additionally, Su noted that RDNA 4 GPUs will be equipped with enhanced AI processing capabilities, broadening their utility for tasks beyond gaming.

“In the gaming graphics area, revenue decreased year-over-year as we prepare to transition to next-generation Radeon GPUs based on our RDNA 4 architecture. In addition to a strong increase in gaming performance, the RDNA 4 delivers significantly higher ray tracing performance and adds new AI capabilities. We are on track to launch the first RDNA 4 GPUs in early 2025.”

Unlike NVIDIA’s upcoming GeForce RTX 50 series, there’s been little leaked information about AMD’s Radeon RX 8000 lineup. Earlier hints from June suggested that AMD might initially launch only two GPUs based on the RDNA 4 architecture. More recently, however, insider Kepler speculated that AMD may step back from competing in the high-end graphics card market with the RX 8000 series, similar to its approach with the RDNA 1-based RX 5000 series, prioritizing mid-range and entry-level options over flagship models.

With AMD’s presentation scheduled for CES 2025, the tech community looks forward to possible updates on RDNA 4 GPUs. Alongside these, AMD is expected to showcase its new Ryzen Z2 mobile chips and the latest Ryzen processors for laptops, which could include performance enhancements targeting portable and high-efficiency computing.

This mix of product announcements could indicate a more diversified focus. AMD aims to strengthen its position across multiple computing segments instead of pushing for dominance in the high-end GPU space.
