Recent rumors and leaks about AMD’s upcoming graphics cards suggest a shift in naming conventions and provide a glimpse at one of the GPUs. Unofficial sources indicate that the RDNA 4 lineup will be branded as Radeon RX 9000, with the RX 9070 XT being the first confirmed model.
Let’s talk about the design of the reference model, which was accidentally revealed by AMD in an advertisement. The leaked design shows a card with three fans, departing from the aesthetic of the Radeon RX 7000 series—a typical trend between generations.
Initially, many speculated that the card in the leak was the RX 8800 XT. However, reliable leaker Hoang Anh Phu clarified that it is actually the RX 9070 XT. Interestingly, this naming deviates from AMD’s usual pattern, as it would traditionally be called the “RX 9700 XT.” This suggests AMD is trying something new with its naming strategy.
Radeon RX 9070 XT specifications and performance
According to another Chinese leaker, Zhangzhonghao, in a post on the Chiphell forum, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is expected to have a Total Board Power (TBP) of 260W. Some custom models might push this up to 330W, depending on clock adjustments. Speaking of clock speeds, the GPU is rumored to have a base frequency of 2.8 GHz and a boost clock reaching 3.1 GHz.
In terms of performance, AMD’s new GPU is said to rival the GeForce RTX 4080, with only about a 5% difference—though it’s unclear whether it will outperform or lag behind. No concrete performance data has been shared, so this remains speculation based on the leaker’s claims.
Rounding out the rumors and leaks, Hoang Anh Phu has shared that the Radeon RX 9070 XT is likely to launch in January 2025, coinciding with CES 2025. The GPU is expected to debut alongside the Ryzen 9 9000X3D CPU and FSR 4, which will incorporate AI-driven enhancements similar to NVIDIA’s DLSS 3.
We’ll find out how accurate these rumors are when AMD takes the stage at CES 2025 on January 6th.
