AMD Ryzen 9000 will perform better after a Windows 11 24H2 Patch

AMD has announced that Microsoft will soon release a patch for Windows 11 24H2 to improve the performance of AMD Ryzen 9000, 7000, and 5000 series processors. This update aims to fix performance issues present since the launch of the Ryzen 9000 series, which also seem to affect the 7000 and 5000 series processors.

The Ryzen 9000 processors, built on the Zen 5 architecture, have received criticism for underperforming compared to the previous Ryzen 7000 series. Despite a 16% boost in instructions per cycle (IPC), many users and tech reviewers feel this increase doesn’t sufficiently justify upgrading to the newer series.

Why Ryzen 9000 processors weren’t performing as they should and how Windows 11 24H2 will fix it

The upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update will specifically target the branch prediction capabilities of the Zen 5 architecture found in AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series processors. Branch prediction is a critical feature that helps reduce performance penalties from mispredictions in highly pipelined processors. AMD has acknowledged that the current Windows 11 version does not fully leverage this capability, leading to suboptimal performance.

With the release of this patch, AMD expects a noticeable boost in the performance of Ryzen processors. They have shared examples of anticipated improvements, comparing the performance between Windows 11 23H2 and the upcoming 24H2 update.

For instance, in Far Cry 6, a game heavily relying on single-core performance, users can expect up to a 13% performance increase. Additionally, titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and UL Procyon office benchmarks are projected to see 7% and 6% performance gains, respectively.

Table shared by AMD comparing the performance of the Ryzen 9000 between versions 23H2 and 24H2 of Windows 11 in different games.

The performance improvements for AMD Ryzen processors will be available in the Windows 11 version 24H2 update, set to roll out to all users starting at the end of September.
