Google began rolling out Android 15 to Pixel phones and tablets on Tuesday, October 15. The update introduces several new security features, including theft protection, a built-in Secure Folder, and improvements to the hardware interface.
The release follows the stable version of Android 15, which was available to developers for about a month before being made public.
Currently, Pixel 6 and newer models are eligible to download the update. Devices from other manufacturers are expected to receive Android 15 in the coming months.
What’s new with Android 15 on Pixel?
In a recent blog post, Google highlighted several key features of the Android 15 update, including introducing a theft protection system now available in the US. This feature, compatible with Android 10 and newer versions, offers additional safeguards against phone theft.
With Android 15, devices now require authentication for actions that thieves often target, such as removing the SIM card or disabling the remote tracking feature. The phone will automatically lock if multiple unsuccessful attempts are made to alter these settings.
“These updates make it harder for thieves to reset and sell a stolen device and help prevent thefts before they happen,” Google stated.
The update also introduces a Secure Folder, a popular feature among Samsung devices, to the Google Pixel lineup. This feature offers enhanced privacy and security for sensitive files and data.
For tablets, Android 15 adds a quick option to pin the taskbar to the screen, along with the ability to create shortcuts for app pairs, making multitasking easier.
Additional improvements include better camera controls for low-light environments, satellite connection support for messaging, and the ability to log into apps that support passkeys with a single tap.
