During a recent earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple Intelligence will not be released with all its features available from the start. Some functionalities, like the integration with ChatGPT, will be rolled out gradually over several months.
Apple Intelligence began its developer testing this week with the beta releases of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1. This initial update includes a few features such as the writing assistant, the Memories function in the Photos app, and a Mail inbox organizer.
However, other features, including the Image Playground image generator, an updated Siri, and support for additional languages, are expected to be introduced later, likely by the end of the fiscal year. The ChatGPT integration is anticipated to arrive by late 2024, but it will not be available at the initial launch.
Cook confirmed the staged rollout during the conference, providing clarity on the release timeline for Apple Intelligence. For more details, check out the full response on MacRumors.
The rollout, as we mentioned in June, we actually started this week with developers. We started with some Apple Intelligence features, but not the full suite. There are other features, like languages beyond US English, that will come later in the year, while there are other features that will only come later in the year. ChatGPT will be integrated by the end of this calendar year (2024). So yes, it is a phased rollout.
When is Apple Intelligence coming?
The beta versions from Apple suggest that the full suite of AI features won’t be available with the initial release of iOS 18 and other operating systems. Instead, these features are expected to be rolled out with the iOS 18.1 update. Although the exact timeline for the ChatGPT integration isn’t confirmed, it might be included in a subsequent update, such as iOS 18.2.
There’s no official release date for iOS 18 yet, but it’s likely to launch in September, with iOS 18.1 possibly arriving in October. This schedule follows Apple’s previous patterns for iOS 17 and iOS 16.
