Apple is reportedly on the verge of starting production of the highly anticipated MacBook Air M4, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. While the new model is not expected to feature significant visual updates compared to its predecessor, it promises notable improvements in performance and efficiency thanks to the new M4 chip.
Alongside this, Apple has adjusted its timeline, postponing the release of the Mac Studio and setting a debut window for a new entry-level iPad.
Sources indicate that production for both the 13-inch and 15-inch versions of the upcoming MacBook Air codenamed J713 and J715, will commence soon. Apple typically ramps up production in advance to ensure a robust supply during launch. The new MacBook Air is expected to retain the design elements of the current generation, featuring a sleek, squared aluminum chassis and a large notch on the display.
While simpler enhancements, such as additional USB ports, could be on the horizon, specific details about these changes are still under wraps. The standout feature, however, will be the M4 chip, which is projected to deliver substantial performance gains over the M3. Early benchmarks, including tests conducted on the iPad Pro M4, show nearly a 30% improvement in Geekbench 6 scores compared to last year’s model.
More launches besides the MacBook Air M4
According to industry sources, Apple is preparing for a series of product launches throughout early 2025, beginning with a new MacBook Air following a software update in December 2024.
The MacBook Air launch, expected between January and March 2025, will come approximately one year after the introduction of the M3 models. During this same period, Apple is reportedly planning to unveil a redesigned iPhone SE, an updated iPad Air with new keyboards, and a refreshed iPad 11.
Sources indicate that the basic iPad, identified under codenames J481 and J482, may be available in two screen sizes for the first time – potentially 11 and 13 inches, following the iPad Air’s approach from May 2024. However, details about the processor specifications and feature sets remain undisclosed.
The company has also reportedly adjusted its timeline for the Mac Studio professional mini PC (codenamed J575). Initially expected alongside the MacBook Air, its launch has been pushed to between March and June 2025, pending a system update in March. Additionally, development continues on the Mac Pro with an M4 chip, though specific details are not available.
The company’s strategy to align most of its computer lineup with the same generation chip is unusual but appears driven by the Apple Intelligence suite. The M4 chip is expected to offer expanded base memory configurations – crucial for AI functionality – and enhanced Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capabilities, which could prove essential in popularizing Apple’s AI features.
Industry insiders suggest the first wave of announcements could begin as soon as next week, with the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models featuring the M4 chip reportedly being unveiled through exclusive press previews. More information is expected to emerge shortly.
