During Apple’s “Glowtime” event on Monday (9), the company unveiled its updated AirPods 4 and an enhanced version of the AirPods Max, focusing on design refinements and superior audio technology.
The AirPods 4 marks a significant update, becoming the brand’s most affordable new headphones. Retaining the iconic open format, Apple has incorporated millions of ear shape analyses to improve comfort. Equipped with the new H2 chip, the AirPods 4 delivers high-definition audio with more intense bass alongside the adaptive sound feature, which equalizes audio based on the environment and ear shape for optimal playback quality.
Apple introduced two versions of the AirPods 4, designed to replace the AirPods 2 and 3 series. The base version features some cost-saving measures, while the traditional model offers Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), wireless charging, and extended battery life (up to 30 hours with ANC versus 24 hours in the base model).
Key upgrades include Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, IPX4 water and sweat resistance, spatial audio, and a shift to a USB-C connector, replacing Lightning. This brings the AirPods lineup in line with new regulations in the European Union, ensuring the longevity of the AirPods 4 in the market. These advancements provide Apple users with a more comfortable and immersive audio experience.
AirPods Max gains a USB-C port.
Apple has introduced a subtle refresh to its top-tier AirPods Max headphones. While the new version retains the same core features from the original 2020 model—like the durable metal and fabric design—it now offers a broader range of color options. Finally, it adopts a USB-C port for charging.
In addition to the classic black and silver, the updated AirPods Max are now available in black, green, lavender, orange, and gold, keeping the previous generation’s well-loved aluminum ear cups and fabric headrest.
They’ve switched to USB-C for charging, but it still can’t be used for audio playback. Otherwise, the headphones continue to offer the same high-definition sound and spatial audio with head tracking as before.
Price and availability
The new AirPods 4 are now available for pre-order internationally as of Monday (9), with an official release date set for September 20. Pricing starts at $129 for the standard model and $179 for the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) version.
The updated AirPods Max in new color options also became available for pre-order today, with a release set for September 10, maintaining the previous price of $549
