Apple appears to be gearing up to enter the smart display market with what might be best described as a “HomePod with a screen” or a “Wall iPad.” According to insights from respected analyst Mark Gurman, this device seems poised to challenge Amazon’s Echo Show 15 in the smart home arena.
The device looks set to be far more than just another smart display. At its heart, it’s expected to be a comprehensive smart home control center featuring deep integration with Siri and Apple’s newest AI platform, Apple Intelligence. Think of it as your personal command center for managing everything from smart lighting to video doorbells while also serving as an intelligent assistant for your daily life.
The hardware design sounds intriguingly unique – picture a device with a 6-inch touchscreen display and generous bezels, roughly equivalent to two iPhones placed side by side. Unlike traditional smart speakers, this device is rumored to include both a camera and battery, offering the flexibility of wireless use.
While touch interactions will be possible, Apple emphasizes voice control through Siri and Apple Intelligence as the primary means of interaction. One clever feature is its potential to act as an in-home communication system, letting family members connect across different rooms.
The device is expected to incorporate proximity sensors for enhanced usability, automatically activating features as you approach. Imagine entering a room and having your air conditioning or lights adjust automatically or seeing the room’s temperature displayed without touching anything.
Compatibility-wise, it’s designed to work seamlessly with Apple HomeKit-enabled devices. There are also whispers about potential official accessories, including monitoring cameras, baby monitors, and external sensors that could detect nearby people or enhance audio capabilities.
On the software front, Apple is reportedly developing a custom interface codenamed “Pebble.” This new system appears to blend elements from WatchOS and iOS, mainly drawing inspiration from the iPhone’s StandBy feature. While users can expect access to apps and widgets, an App Store might not be available in early versions.
While launch dates and official pricing remain under wraps, industry speculation suggests Apple might aim for competitive pricing in the US market, potentially landing between $150 to $230 – putting it in direct competition with Amazon’s Echo Show 8 and Google’s Nest Hub Max.
The fusion of smart home controls, AI assistance, and Apple’s ecosystem integration could make this device an intriguing addition to the connected home landscape, especially for those already invested in Apple’s ecosystem.
