The graphics card market, currently dominated by NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel, may soon welcome a new contender. According to Globes, ARM is reportedly preparing to launch its own line of GPUs designed for gaming and artificial intelligence.
Sources indicate that ARM has dedicated around 100 hardware and software engineers to this project at its development center in Ra’anana, Israel. Although specific details about the technical specifications or market positioning of these GPUs have not been disclosed, it is clear that ARM is aiming to capture the gaming market and offer solutions for AI tasks.
If ARM’s plans come to fruition, the company would enter a competitive field currently led by NVIDIA, with AMD and Intel also vying for market share. ARM’s entry could significantly shake up the landscape, challenging NVIDIA’s near-monopoly and positioning ARM as a serious player in the GPU market.
ARM wants to expand business
ARM is familiar with the GPU market, though its current offerings are limited to mobile devices through its Mali and Immortalis architectures. The potential move into desktop and notebook GPUs aligns with the company’s strategy to target the gaming market.
Recent rumors suggest ARM might collaborate with NVIDIA on developing CPUs for gaming consoles. Should ARM proceed with its GPU plans, a partnership with Qualcomm is also possible, integrating ARM’s graphics solutions with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite.
Moreover, ARM could address a significant gap in the artificial intelligence sector by offering cost-effective solutions. Intel’s attempt with its ARC boards fell short, lacking both stamina and sufficient industry support, which has likely led to its decline.
Given the growing demand for AI solutions and the rise of AI PCs, ARM’s entry into the GPU market could be timely. The company might capitalize on this trend by providing powerful yet affordable graphics cards, positioning itself as a viable alternative in both gaming and AI applications.
