The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) introduced the specifications for the upcoming Bluetooth 6.0 standard on Tuesday (3). The update brings notable advancements, particularly channel probing technology, enhancing device tracking and security.
This new feature is designed to improve the accuracy and performance of location tracking services from companies like Apple, Google, and Samsung, which rely on Bluetooth technology. According to the Bluetooth SIG, “Find My” services will benefit from faster and more precise tracking, making it easier to locate lost items.
In addition to better tracking, Bluetooth 6.0 strengthens security for digital keys to unlock cars, hotel doors, and similar applications. Channel probing introduces a “robust layer of security,” ensuring that only authorized users within a specific range can unlock doors or gain access to secure areas.
Other enhancements in Bluetooth 6.0 include new filtering mechanisms to boost data transfer reliability and performance and additional tools for developers to improve user experiences across various applications.
Specifications now available
The Bluetooth 6.0 specifications are now available for manufacturers to develop devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and trackers that utilize the updated standard. While the announcement has been made, there is no official timeline for releasing the first devices featuring Bluetooth 6.0.
However, manufacturers are expected to introduce the first Bluetooth 6.0-compatible products, including smartphones and other electronics, in the coming months.
