TechCrunch reports that the web browser and search startup Brave has recently laid off 27 employees across various departments. The company has confirmed these layoffs but has not provided further details regarding the remaining headcount or the reasons behind the job cuts. This reduction represents a significant portion of the company’s workforce, which PitchBook estimates to be around 191 employees.

This latest round of layoffs comes approximately 10 months after Brave’s previous workforce reduction in October 2023, when the company cut 9% of its total staff. At that time, Brave cited “cost management in this challenging economic environment” as the primary reason for the cuts.

In recent months, Brave shifted its focus towards artificial intelligence (AI) after introducing several crypto-related features. In a phased rollout, the company launched its AI assistant, Leo, across multiple platforms, including desktop, Android, iPad, and iPhone.

In June, Brave integrated its search results with the Leo chatbot, allowing users to inquire about sports scores or obtain additional context for articles without leaving the page. The company also introduced a Leo Premium subscription priced at $14.99 monthly, offering access to improved models and higher usage limits.

Earlier this month, Brave expanded its AI capabilities by allowing all users to link their own models for use within the browser, following a testing period with a limited user base.

Brave has not specified whether the costs of developing and operating these AI-focused features contributed to the recent layoffs.

As the tech industry faces economic challenges, many companies reevaluate their workforce and operational strategies. Brave’s decision to reduce its staff for the second time in less than a year reflects the ongoing adjustments within the sector.

Industry analysts will be closely watching Brave’s next moves, particularly about its AI initiatives and how the company balances innovation with financial sustainability in the current market climate.
