OpenAI has introduced a new feature for ChatGPT that allows it to search the web and provide real-time information directly within conversations. Users can access this research tool through the ChatGPT app, but OpenAI has also developed an official Chrome extension that makes ChatGPT the default search option, effectively replacing Google.
With the extension enabled, users can simply type queries into the browser’s search bar and receive AI-generated responses directly from ChatGPT. The responses appear in a chat window alongside a panel that cites all the sources used, ensuring transparency.
The new search tool goes beyond typical tasks like answering general questions or providing definitions. It can handle up-to-date information requests, including live sports scores, weather forecasts, breaking news, financial reports, and even complex tasks like creating travel itineraries. OpenAI aims to make ChatGPT a versatile and reliable alternative to traditional search engines, catering to both general and real-time information needs.
How to use ChatGPT search in Chrome
It is important to remember that the extension is only available on Chrome for desktop (on cell phones, the option is to use the ChatGPT app itself). Follow these steps:
- Look for the ChatGPT Search extension link at chromewebstore.google.com
- Click “Use in Chrome”;
- Install the component;
- Open the Chrome search bar;
- Type any term and press Enter;
- See the search result on ChatGPT.
If you want to use Google search with the extension active, you must enter the shortcut “!g” before searching:
- Open the search bar;
- Type !geo search term, such as !g Canaltech.
Who can use ChatGPT search?
The ChatGPT Search extension is currently free, but access is being rolled out gradually. At the moment, only users subscribed to the paid ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team plans, along with those on the SearchGPT waitlist, have access to the new feature.
OpenAI plans to expand availability in phases, with a broader rollout to the general public expected in the coming months. This staggered release aims to ensure a smooth launch and gather feedback before making the search tool widely accessible.
