China Unveils GPMI SuperVeloz: New Challenger to HDMI Standard

By Aayush

China is once again making waves in the tech world. Following the recent debut of its atomic-level chip, the country has now introduced a brand-new connection standard designed to compete with HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C. This new technology is called the General Purpose Media Interface (GPMI).

GPMI boasts some impressive specs—most notably, it can handle data transfer speeds of up to 192 Gbps, which is more than twice the bandwidth offered by HDMI 2.1. Its name translates to “media interface for general use,” and that’s exactly what it’s aiming for. The interface supports audio, video, internet connectivity, and power delivery—all through a single connection.

Even more impressive? It can deliver up to 480 watts of power, which puts it far ahead of current standards like USB-C. With these capabilities, GPMI has the potential to become one of the most advanced and versatile connection standards on the market.

Maximum GPMI power only with proprietary connection

When it comes to physical connections, the new GPMI standard uses both USB-C and a proprietary Type-B connector. While GPMI can work with the familiar USB-C format, it doesn’t unlock its full potential in that mode, offering up to 96 Gbps of bandwidth and 240W of power delivery, which is still on par or slightly better than the best current standards.

To hit its peak performance192 Gbps data transfer and 480W power—GPMI requires its custom Type-B connector. Even so, the USB-C performance is impressive and surpasses existing mainstream options. GPMI’s all-in-one functionality sets it apart: it can handle video, audio, networking, and power in a single streamlined connection.

Here’s how it stacks up against other major standards:

  • HDMI 2.1 – Up to 48 Gbps / No power delivery
  • HDMI 2.2 – Up to 96 Gbps / No power delivery
  • USB-C – Up to 80 Gbps / 240W
  • DisplayPort 2.1b – 80 Gbps / No power delivery
  • GPMI Type-C – 96 Gbps / 240W
  • GPMI Type-B – 192 Gbps / 480W

Major Chinese tech players like Huawei, TCL, and Sharp are already moving to integrate the GPMI standard into their devices. The big question now is whether GPMI will catch on globally—or remain a primarily Asian market innovation.
