Electronic Arts has announced that its Origin application will officially cease operations on April 17, 2025. The decision is tied to Microsoft’s plans to discontinue support for 32-bit operating systems, prompting EA to retire its legacy app.
Launched in 2011, Origin served as a dedicated platform for EA’s PC gaming titles. However, players with modern systems can seamlessly transition to the EA App, which is fully compatible with 64-bit operating systems.
While 32-bit versions of Windows 10 still exist, 64-bit architecture has been widely adopted since the release of Windows Vista. If your PC is currently running a 32-bit system, you may want to check if your hardware can handle an upgrade. For those whose systems are ineligible, upgrading to a new device will be necessary, especially as Microsoft phases out support for older systems.
How to continue playing EA titles on PC?
It’s worth noting that while Origin and the EA App are distinct programs, they both use your Electronic Arts account to sync your game library, DLCs, and cloud save data. This means that if you switch to the newer EA App, you’ll still have access to all the content you’ve purchased or downloaded through Origin.
Historically, many of EA’s popular franchises—like The Sims, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, FIFA (now known as EA Sports FC), and Skate—were exclusively available on Origin for PC users. For years, Origin was the only way to access these games on computers.
Even though many EA games are now accessible through multiple platforms, some players still rely on Origin for older titles. For instance, The Sims 3 and The Sims 4—along with their numerous expansions—were originally launched on Origin. The EA App, on the other hand, only became publicly available toward the end of 2022.
