Elon Musk seems to have his sights set on disrupting email platforms after making waves in the social media space. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday (16), the billionaire hinted at the possibility of launching a competitor to Gmail.
The rumors kicked off with a tweet from DogeDesigner, who suggested the concept of “X Mail.” Musk responded, saying the idea was “on the list of things to do.”
Another user proposed the idea of an email service integrated with X’s direct messaging interface, offering a minimalist design without clutter like topics or text formatting. Musk quickly affirmed the vision, stating: “That’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
It appears Musk may be planning to reinvent how we think about email, combining simplicity with innovative features.
Uncertain launch
While Musk’s responses hint at an interest in developing an email service, there’s no confirmation on whether or when it will materialize. Additionally, it remains unclear whether the service would be integrated into X or launched as a standalone platform.
X has already branched out beyond social networking. For instance, it now offers a job listings page, positioning itself as a competitor to LinkedIn, and recently introduced a generative AI chatbot called Grok.
This expansion aligns with Musk’s vision of transforming X into a “superapp”—a platform that consolidates multiple services under one roof. The rebranding of Twitter to X in 2023 marked a pivotal step in this direction. An email service could be the next puzzle piece in Musk’s ambitious plans.
