Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will not have expansions or DLCs

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will not receive any expansions or DLC to extend its story. According to the game’s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, the development team is fully focused on creating the third—and potentially final—installment of the reimagined narrative.

In an interview with Daily Star, Hamaguchi dismissed the idea of a middle chapter, emphasizing that their efforts are entirely dedicated to the next title in the saga. Fans can look forward to a complete continuation of the story in the third installment rather than through additional content for Rebirth.

“We definitely listen to the wishes of the fans, the voices out there that want this type of content. I completely understand, but I think from my perspective what fans really want to see isn’t necessarily DLC. They want to see the third part of the story as soon as possible.”

This doesn’t mean Square Enix has stopped working on content altogether. The studio has previously promised updates for the “Queen’s Blood” minigame, suggesting additional cards and elements are still in development. Hamaguchi’s comments seem to refer specifically to story-related content bridging Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and the next installment, rather than other forms of expansion.

However, Square Enix has not yet announced when these updates for “Queen’s Blood” will be released, leaving fans waiting for more details.

No expansion for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Hamaguchi’s statement confirms that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will not include an additional chapter like Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, which introduced Yuffie Kisaragi in her own storyline before she joined the main group in the sequel.

The Intergrade DLC, released exclusively for PlayStation 5 and PCs, sparked some controversy since many players only owned the original game on PS4 and were unable to access the additional content.

Now, Square Enix appears to be taking a different approach, focusing on concluding the narrative introduced in Final Fantasy VII Remake and continued in Rebirth. Considering producer Tetsuya Nomura is also juggling development on Kingdom Hearts 4, the push to wrap up the Final Fantasy VII story makes sense as the studio balances its ambitious projects.
