Gmail will make it easier to search for relevant emails in the app, website reveals

By Aayush

Gmail is testing a new filter to highlight the most relevant emails in the search results on its mobile app, according to reports from Android Police. This feature is being gradually rolled out to a small group of users and is expected to be available more widely shortly.

Currently, Gmail sorts search results by date, listing emails from newest to oldest. However, the new update aims to go beyond this chronological order by prioritizing essential messages, such as starred emails, those with attachments, or those that have been replied to frequently.

This feature might replace the “Top results” tab, which currently surfaces two emails out of sequence at the top of search results. Although Google hasn’t yet specified the exact criteria to determine an email’s relevance, the update is designed to streamline the user experience on mobile devices.

With this enhancement, users who receive frequent emails from a particular contact can quickly find specific content without having to scroll through a long list of messages, making it easier to access important information right when needed.

The feature is currently being tested with a limited group of Gmail users, and there’s no official confirmation from Google about when or if this new email filter will be rolled out more broadly. It appears to be an experimental feature, and Google has not provided a timeline for a broader release.

This means that most users will have to wait for further announcements from Google before expecting the update on their devices. It remains accessible only to a small segment of the user base as part of a phased testing approach.

Gmail with more AI features

In 2024, Gmail rolled out several new AI-powered features to make life easier for users. It now includes an extension with Gemini, Google’s AI model, that helps you quickly find files within your email conversations using a chatbot.

There’s also a new side panel where you can chat directly with the AI for help. The “Help Me Write” tool has been added to improve email drafts by offering suggestions and refining your messages.
