God of War Ragnarok Gets Bombarded with negative reviews on Steam

Since its release on September 19, “God of War Ragnarok” has faced a wave of negative reviews on Steam, with over 1,900 users expressing dissatisfaction. The primary complaint is Sony’s requirement for players to link their PlayStation Network (PSN) account to play the game on PC.

This mandatory login has frustrated many users, although some report being able to start the game without it. Others have raised concerns about the account creation process, including problems with identity verification.

In addition to the PSN login issue, the game is also receiving criticism for technical problems, such as optimization and bugs. Currently, “God of War Ragnarok” holds a “neutral” rating on Steam, with 5,840 total reviews, of which 3,891 are positive and 1,949 are negative.

Despite the mixed reception, the game’s performance issues and PSN login requirements are driving the majority of negative feedback.

“The age verification process involves uploading a copy of your ID, doing a facial scan, or receiving an SMS. I don’t have a camera, so I’m limited to SMS… which doesn’t work. The SMS never arrived… I close it and open it to start again, still nothing, then I hit a rate limit. Now the connection to the server times out. I literally can’t play the game I bought. It’s taking longer to create an account I don’t want than it does to download the game,” commented user Travis.

Some users still criticize the requirement to have a video card with at least 6 GB of VRAM to open the game.

“The insistence on this anti-consumer stance is impressive. As if it weren’t enough to FORCE anyone who BOUGHT the game on Steam to create a PSN account to be able to play a singleplayer game, the company simply decided to prevent the use of GPUs with less than 6GB of VRAM,” posted user Ligeiro.

Many players have pointed out that God of War Ragnarok is not running on Nvidia GTX 1650 graphics cards, causing significant frustration. According to Steam’s August 2024 Hardware and Software Survey, the GTX 1650 is the third most popular GPU on the platform, with a 3.91% user base preference. This makes the issue particularly widespread, as many players rely on this GPU to play games.

Even users with more powerful setups have reported persistent issues, including constant crashes, audio bugs, graphical glitches, low frame rates, and stuttering. These optimization problems contribute to the game’s negative reviews on Steam, as players across various hardware configurations struggle with technical challenges.
