Although Sony and Santa Monica Studio did not announce a new God of War title during the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebrations, insiders suggest that a new game is in development and could launch on PlayStation 5 in 2025.
According to Jeff Grubb, the upcoming game will take place in Greece, but it won’t be the long-rumored remastered collection of earlier titles. Instead, it is expected to be a spin-off with a parallel storyline. Given that we are approaching the second quarter of the year, PlayStation Studios may reveal more details soon—if an announcement is indeed on the horizon.
Speculation about the next God of War has been rampant, ranging from a remastered collection of the original games to a possible “bridge” linking the Greek and Norse mythologies. However, this transition was already explored in a 2021 Dark Horse Comics release.
With industry insiders like Jeff Grubb and Tom Henderson reinforcing the idea of a Greek mythology setting, it seems likely that the new game will revisit Kratos’ past. What remains uncertain is whether it will be another prequel, a bridge between the old and new eras, a return of Kratos to Greece, or even a standalone adventure featuring Atreus.
Celebrating 20 years of God of War
Celebrating God of War’s 20th anniversary without announcing a new game or sharing insights about the franchise’s future feels like a missed opportunity for Sony and Santa Monica Studio. The last entry, God of War Ragnarök (2022), was a massive success, but since then, there has been no official word on Kratos’ next journey.
To acknowledge the milestone, Sony released a commemorative video featuring highlights from the franchise—from its origins on the PS2 to the recent 2018 and 2022 reboots. The video focuses on Kratos’ evolution, showing both his losses and victories over the years.
Sony’s Current Challenges & Industry Shifts
Sony and PlayStation Studios are currently undergoing significant internal changes. Recently, Hideaki Nishino was appointed as the company’s new CEO, bringing new business strategies, including console rentals and future peripheral technologies.
How these shifts will impact the PS5 generation or whether they will be more relevant for the PS6 era remains to be seen. However, all is not well—for example, the PS5 Pro’s sales performance has reportedly disappointed executives, raising concerns about its success and Sony’s long-term business strategy.
