Google has started notifying users that some Google Chrome browser extensions will soon be retired. The measure affects several ad blockers, including uBlock Origin (uBO), one of the most popular for blocking advertising. There is still no confirmed date for the limitation to take place.
The action is part of Google’s strategy to change the protocol for hosting extensions in the browser with the new Manifest V3 standard. Tools using the old standard, Manifest V2, will be discontinued for not adhering to the platform’s recommended practices. In August, Google began alerting users through the browser about the future deactivation of the uBO extension. Users also made reports of other warnings.
It is still possible to install the component for now, but attention is needed because the project’s protocol update is expected to take effect in June 2025.
