Google has officially released Android 15 to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), allowing developers to access the source code ahead of the general release. While Pixel devices are expected to receive the Android 15 update in the next few weeks, other manufacturers will roll out the update over the coming months.
This early release gives developers a head start in preparing their apps and systems for the new features and improvements in Android 15.
Android 15 for developers
Google’s release of Android 15 to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) provides developers with early access to the new operating system, allowing them to adapt and optimize their apps using tools like Android Studio and Jetpack Compose. To support this, Google has introduced an educational series called “Spotlight Weeks,” which will dive into technical topics and new features specific to Android 15.
For Pixel users, the official Android 15 update will be rolled out in the coming weeks. Those participating in the Android 15 beta program have the option to either wait for the stable release or continue with the latest beta updates into the next quarter.
Other major brands, including Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and Xiaomi, are expected to roll out the Android 15 update “in the coming months.”
Android 15 promises a range of new features and improvements, such as one-tap passkey support, theft detection, and enhanced multitasking for larger screens. The update will also offer new security measures, like the ability to restrict access to specific apps. Accessibility features are also getting a boost, with TalkBack integrating Gemini AI to provide audio descriptions of images, and the expansion of Circle to Search, which will include a Shazam-like music identification feature.
While the full rollout of Android 15 is still on the horizon, developers can start exploring the source code on AOSP to familiarize themselves with the new features and prepare their apps for the upcoming official launch.
