Google unveiled its latest Pixel 9 series on Tuesday afternoon, introducing three distinct models within the same family for the first time. The lineup includes the Pixel 9, a new affordable flagship option, alongside the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL, which continue the company’s tradition of offering cutting-edge hardware and software.
In response to Apple and Samsung’s recent integration of advanced AI features in their devices, Google has incorporated AI capabilities across the entire Pixel 9 range. The smartphones now feature Gemini integration, providing context-aware responses based on-screen content and user inquiries.
Additionally, the new screenshot functionality allows users to attach phrases for easier future searches, while the innovative Circle to Search feature enables more interactive image-based searches.
The Pixel 9 series also introduces novel AI-powered photo editing tools. Magic Editor now offers the ability to modify image backgrounds with various sky styles, and the “Add Me” feature allows users to insert themselves into photos they weren’t originally part of.
Consistent with Google’s previous approaches, all three Pixel 9 models have the same processor. The Tensor G4 chip, designed by Google and manufactured by Samsung, powers the entire lineup.
This processor incorporates the Exynos 5400 modem, enabling satellite emergency service capabilities similar to those in recent iPhone models. This feature allows users to call for help and request rescue services even in areas without cellular or internet coverage.
Pixel 9
The Pixel 9 debuts as Google’s new affordable flagship option, featuring a dual rear camera setup instead of three, reduced RAM, and a smaller battery capacity than its Pro counterparts.
The device boasts a 6.24-inch OLED display with Full HD+ resolution, a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 1,800 nits for HDR content. It also incorporates an improved ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for faster biometric authentication.
Google has equipped the Pixel 9 with 12 GB of RAM, offering storage options of 128 GB and 256 GB. The smartphone is powered by a 4,700 mAh battery, supporting 45-watt fast wired charging and wireless power sharing. This feature allows users to charge compatible accessories, such as earbuds and smartwatches, by placing them on the phone’s back.
Regarding photography, the Pixel 9 introduces a dual-camera system on the rear. It combines a high-resolution 50 MP primary sensor with a 48 MP ultrawide lens, providing versatility for various shooting scenarios. The front-facing camera utilizes a 10.5 MP sensor for selfies and video calls.
Pixel 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL
The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL emerge as the true successors to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, sharing an identical camera setup for the first time. This approach ensures users can enjoy maximum performance regardless of their size preference.
Both premium models feature a high-resolution 42 MP front-facing camera for superior selfies and video calls. The rear camera system comprises three lenses: a 50 MP primary sensor, a 48 MP ultrawide lens, and a 48 MP periscope lens capable of up to 30x zoom for detailed long-range shots.
While sharing many features, the two models differ in display size. The Pixel 9 Pro sports a 6.3-inch panel with 1.2K resolution, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL boasts a larger 6.8-inch screen with 1.3K resolution. Both displays support a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz and offer impressive peak brightness levels, reaching up to 2,050 nits in HDR content. They also incorporate an advanced ultrasonic fingerprint sensor beneath the display for improved accuracy and speed.
In terms of memory and storage, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL have 16GB of RAM. The Pixel 9 Pro offers storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL is available in 256GB and 512GB variants.
Battery capacity differs between the two models, with the Pixel 9 Pro featuring a 4,700 mAh battery (matching the standard Pixel 9), and the larger Pixel 9 Pro XL housing a 5,060 mAh battery. Both support 45-watt fast charging, reaching 70% capacity in just 30 minutes.
