After revealing the sales numbers for GTA 5, Rockstar has shared the total sales figures for the entire Grand Theft Auto franchise since its debut in 1997. According to the studio, the series has sold an impressive 440 million copies worldwide.
This further highlights GTA 5’s incredible success, as the game alone accounts for nearly half of that total—reaching 210 million copies sold since its release in 2013. The remaining 230 million sales come from previous GTA titles, though Rockstar has not disclosed the individual breakdown for each game.
As the franchise continues to sell millions of copies, anticipation for GTA 6 is reaching new heights. Set to launch on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles in 2025, the upcoming game is expected to push sales even further—potentially surpassing 450 million and, who knows, maybe even hitting the 500 million mark in record time.
Rockstar is expanding its Operations
The hype surrounding GTA 6 is so massive that Rockstar is expanding its operations. The company recently announced the acquisition of Video Games Deluxe, officially rebranding it as Rockstar Australia.
While this move shows Rockstar’s commitment to investing in its future, the acquisition is somewhat controversial. Video Games Deluxe was founded in 2013 by Brendan McNamara, who previously led Team Bondi during the development of L.A. Noire. However, allegations of poor working conditions ultimately led to Team Bondi’s closure and the loss of its partnership with Rockstar.
It’s unclear whether the studio will play a direct role in GTA 6, but Video Games Deluxe has collaborated with Rockstar on several projects in recent years, including the L.A. Noire re-release, L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files, and contributions to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition.
With this latest acquisition, Rockstar now operates ten subsidiary studios worldwide, in addition to its main headquarters in New York City.
