How Microsoft is Changing Video Playback in Edge and Chrome

You know Edge, the browser that came with Windows 10? Well, at first, people didn’t like it. They thought it wasn’t great for browsing the web. But Microsoft didn’t give up on it. Instead, they decided to change how it works under the hood.

They switched to something called Chromium. Don’t mix this up with Chrome – that’s Google’s browser. Chromium is an open-source thing that anyone can use and improve. After this switch, Microsoft started putting time and money into making Chromium better. By doing this, they were also making their new Edge browser better.

Microsoft has been doing a lot to help improve Chromium. They’ve fixed bugs and added new stuff. One thing they’re working on now is pretty cool – it’s about how videos play in the browser. Sounds like they’re trying to make watching videos online even better!

Microsoft wants to pause playback of unloaded videos in both Edge and Chrome.

Microsoft wants to fix a problem with multimedia on the web
Microsoft will introduce a solution for videos embedded in websites that play without being loaded

Under their new boss, Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s been really into open-source stuff. They’ve already made scrolling smoother in Chromium browsers. And now, they’ve got another cool idea.

Here’s the thing: sometimes when you open a webpage, there’s a video that starts playing before it’s fully loaded. You might hear the sound, but can’t see the video yet. It’s pretty annoying, right?

Microsoft wants to fix this. Their plan is to stop videos from playing until they’re actually ready to be shown on the page. This should make browsing a lot nicer.

We found out about this from some notes Microsoft put on GitHub (that’s a place where developers share their work). Microsoft thinks this change will make using the web better for everyone.

They’re not just stopping there, though. Microsoft also wants to give users more control over videos and other media on websites. The goal is to make your time online smoother and more enjoyable.

Microsoft plans to change Chromium browser policies
Source | Windows Latest

To do this, The company proposed a new operating policy for iframe media playback in the Chromium project. The initial step is to check whether the embedded video has been processed. Unprocessed videos will not be played by the browser. In such cases, Chromium will instruct the embedded media to pause playback. Once the iframe has finished loading, a resume command will be issued.

This approach aims to empower developers to enhance website performance and improve the management of embedded multimedia content. The company has already begun implementing this policy, and users can expect to see a gradual rollout of this solution, addressing a persistent issue.
