Some Windows Outlook users are reporting issues connecting to Outlook.com email. This includes Outlook randomly disconnecting or unable to connect to POP, IMAP, and Exchange accounts since January 23, 2024. Microsoft has acknowledged the issues and is working on a fix. While they address it, here is how you may be able to resolve the Outlook connection problems.
Causes and solutions of Outlook disconnection problem
The Outlook disconnection issue is happening on both desktop and mobile apps. Some users report Outlook disconnects whenever they close and reopen it. Others say it disconnects randomly or won’t connect at all.
The affected versions are Outlook 2013, 2016, Microsoft 365, Thunderbird, and other email apps using POP, IMAP, or Exchange to sync messages. These protocols allow accessing email across different devices, but can also cause conflicts.
Microsoft hasn’t explained the exact cause yet. They say they’re investigating and will provide updates.
In the meantime, the simplest solution is to access email through the Outlook.com web interface. This avoids synchronization issues.
Another option is to double-check check your POP, IMAP, and Exchange connection settings are correct. You can also try repairing your Outlook profile or creating a new one.
