Rumors have circulated that Huawei is testing advanced facial recognition sensors beneath the screens of its future smartphones. However, a recent leak suggests this technology might not appear in the Mate 80 series next year.
In a discussion on social media, an informant known as Fixed Focus Digital addressed a user query about the presence of under-display facial authentication sensors in the Mate 80. The response was cautious, noting that certainty is elusive while many anticipate this feature for the Mate 80. The informant even indicated uncertainty about whether it would be ready for the Mate 70 series, which is expected later this year.
Despite the uncertainty, Huawei may work on significant technical improvements to enhance light transmission through the display, enabling accurate facial recognition without a visible sensor.
However, integrating an under-screen front camera remains challenging. Current technology produces images with distortions, faded colors, and low contrast, which likely means Huawei will maintain the front camera in a small circular notch while focusing on under-display facial recognition sensors.
As Huawei aims for a seamless display without notches, achieving high-quality under-screen cameras will take time. Whether Huawei introduces this facial recognition technology in the Mate 80 series ahead of competitors like Apple remains to be seen.
