Meta has announced an update to how it labels content edited by AI tools on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. Instead of showing the “AI info” label directly below a user’s name, it will now be relocated to the post’s menu. This means users will have to actively check the menu to see if AI tools were used to modify the image or video. However, for entirely AI-generated content, the visible label will remain.
Meta explained that this update aims to provide a clearer distinction between minor edits and fully AI-created content. The company will still apply labels based on signals like metadata from AI tools or users self-identifying their use of AI. This change is set to roll out next week.
This is the latest in a series of adjustments to Meta’s AI labels. Back in July, Meta switched the label from “Made with AI” to “AI info” after feedback from photographers who reported that the previous label was being incorrectly applied to authentic photos. These labels are part of Meta’s broader effort to increase transparency around the use of AI in content creation.
