Staying true to its new multiplatform approach, Microsoft announced on Tuesday (4) that Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will be making their way to PS5 in 2025. Age of Mythology: Retold is set to launch on March 4, while Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will arrive sometime in the second quarter, though an exact date hasn’t been confirmed yet.
The release of Age of Mythology: Retold will also coincide with the debut of the “Immortals Pillars” expansion. This DLC introduces the Chinese pantheon, new units, fresh gameplay mechanics, and an entirely new map. Pre-orders for the game are already live on the PlayStation Store, with the standard edition priced at $99.99 and the premium edition— which includes the expansion—available for $169.99.
As for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, pre-orders haven’t started yet, and the game doesn’t have a dedicated PlayStation Store page at this time. However, Microsoft has confirmed that both titles will support cross-platform play and maintain full content parity across PS5, Xbox, and PC, ensuring the same experience regardless of where you play.
This marks a big step in bringing classic strategy games to a broader audience, making them more accessible than ever before.
Celebrating the “AGE” franchise with Microsoft
Microsoft has made an exciting announcement celebrating a significant milestone in the Age of Empires franchise: the beloved strategy game series has reached 60 million players worldwide. Microsoft is bringing the series to PlayStation 5 players to mark this achievement, specifically with Age of Empires and Age of Mythology debuting on the platform.
This expansion to PS5 represents a notable shift, as the series has historically been primarily associated with PC gaming and Xbox.
Looking ahead to 2025, Age of Empires IV is set to receive substantial new content. The first major addition will be the “Knights of Cross and Rose” DLC, scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2025. This expansion promises to bring fresh content to the medieval strategy experience. The development team is also working on a second content package, though specific details are being kept under wraps for now.
The mobile gaming community hasn’t been forgotten either. Age of Empires Mobile is introducing several engaging features and events this February. Players can look forward to participating in the “Battle of Dawn” campaign, which will run alongside a special event called “Stellar Glory.” Celebrating Valentine’s Day on February 14th, the game will feature exclusive cosmetic items and three specialized events centered around an intriguing narrative involving Princess Josephine’s treasure hunt.
Microsoft can launch all other games on PS5
Microsoft has significantly expanded its cross-platform presence beyond the recently announced PS5 versions of Age of Mythology: Retold and Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. In a notable shift in strategy, the company revealed that Forza Horizon 5, their acclaimed racing franchise, will make its way to PlayStation 5. This announcement came alongside news of several other major titles coming to PS5, including the highly anticipated Ninja Gaiden 4, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Doom: The Dark Ages.
This strategic pivot gained additional context when Xbox head Phil Spencer indicated that more previously Xbox-exclusive titles would be released on competing consoles. However, this announcement has sparked widespread speculation about the potential PlayStation releases of Microsoft’s flagship franchises, particularly Halo and Gears of War, which have historically been cornerstones of Xbox’s exclusive lineup.
Microsoft’s embrace of a multi-platform approach could have far-reaching implications for the gaming industry. Thomas Mahler, CEO of Moon Studios, suggests this might influence Sony’s own exclusivity strategy.
Sony has already shown openness to platform expansion, as evidenced by their PC releases and the launch of Lego Horizon Adventures on Nintendo Switch in 2024. This gradual shift indicates a potential industry-wide transformation in how platform holders approach game distribution.
