Microsoft Cancels Edge Redesign with Floating tabs

In an unexpected turn of events, Microsoft has decided to cancel its plans to introduce a new user interface in the Edge browser. Initially announced in 2023, this update would have featured rounded tabs and integrated Mica and Acrylic effects, designed to better align Edge with the modern visual aesthetics of Windows 11.

The redesign aimed to modernize Edge’s appearance and create a clearer distinction between Edge and Google Chrome, which has retained a design quite similar to Microsoft’s browser. However, Microsoft has opted not to proceed with these changes, surprising users who are anticipating the refreshed look.

Microsoft Edge gives up on having its own identity… for now.

During the initial announcement of the Edge redesign, Yusef Mehdi, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, emphasized that the new interface would make Edge feel “lighter and more modern,” aiming for a more cohesive visual experience with Windows 11. The introduction of floating and rounded tabs was welcomed by users seeking a fresh aesthetic that would set Edge apart from Google Chrome. However, more than a year later, Microsoft has officially discontinued the update.

In a quiet move, the experimental options to enable the redesign have been removed from the Canary version of Edge, signaling the end of the planned changes. While some minor updates, like webpage borders and the repositioning of the user button, will remain, the bulk of the design overhaul has been scrapped.

This decision surprised many, as the redesign promised a sleeker, more visually appealing experience for Windows 11 users. Microsoft has not provided a clear explanation for this change, though it’s possible technical issues or concerns about user experience were factors.

Despite the shift, a Microsoft representative told Zac Bowden of Windows Central that the company remains committed to exploring new ways to enhance the Edge browser’s appearance and functionality.
