Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, has confirmed that Microsoft is working on a portable gaming console. The company is developing prototypes and planning its strategy for entering the portable gaming market.
However, Spencer emphasized that it’s still too early to share specifics about the device, with its release likely a few years away. The portable console is expected to launch either close to or alongside the next generation of Xbox consoles.
In the meantime, the Xbox team is focused on enhancing the Xbox app for existing portable gaming devices. One of the most common complaints from users is the app’s interface, which is not very user-friendly when used with portable controls. Microsoft’s efforts aim to improve the experience for gamers and streamline the ecosystem, making it more accessible and enjoyable to use on portable platforms.
Xbox enters the portable competition.
Although Microsoft has never released its own portable consoles, it seemed inevitable that the company would eventually explore this gaming market segment.
Nintendo has long dominated the portable gaming space with the success of the Nintendo Switch, which combines a traditional console and handheld functionality. Sony also made its mark with the PSP and PS Vita and, more recently, with the PlayStation Portal, a portable player for the PS5. Now, it’s Xbox’s turn to enter this competitive portable gaming race.
However, in recent years, the landscape has evolved. With the launch of the Steam Deck, which brings PC gaming into a handheld form, a new wave of devices has emerged. Other companies, like ASUS with the ROG Ally X, Lenovo with the Legion GO, and MSI with the Claw, are all vying for attention in this space.
For Xbox to capture a meaningful portion of the market, it will need to compete not only with Nintendo and Sony but also with these newer entrants, each offering its unique take on portable gaming.
More details about Xbox’s portable console—such as its release date, specifications, and pricing—are expected to be shared as the project develops.
