Microsoft constantly works on updates and new features for its applications and services, and Windows is no exception. Recently, it seems the company might be planning a significant change to the app menu in Windows for computers.
The current Windows 11 app menu is primary, showing a list of programs and folders. However, according to user @phantomofearth on X, Microsoft could redesign this menu to resemble the one found in iOS. Stay tuned for more details as this development unfolds.
Microsoft could replace the Windows app menu with an iOS-style category view

2024 has been an exciting year for Microsoft, with the company focused on enhancing its services, applications, and tools, and fixing bugs to improve performance. Windows is also getting some attention, with rumors suggesting a new design for the app list in the Windows 11 Start menu.
According to user @phantomofearth on X, Microsoft is developing a new view option for the app menu, which might be included in build 22635.3930 of Windows 11. While some features may not be fully operational yet, the update is expected soon.
The user also shared an image showing that the new interface could allow users to switch between different views, such as a category perspective, and sort apps either alphabetically or in a grid layout through a drop-down menu.
It looks like another Start menu > All apps view option is coming soon: Category view. Present in build 22635.3930, with some not yet functional categories.
Also, you’ll be able to switch between the existing alphabetical and new grid/category views using a dropdown menu. https://t.co/qFtcTm4BnB pic.twitter.com/ABtXZJ2Irl

Many of the new features are not yet functional, but they give us a glimpse into Microsoft’s plans. The new app view layout, organized by categories, is reminiscent of what we see in iOS.
In this updated Start menu view, you could potentially sort applications into the following categories:
- Productivity
- News and Weather
- Fun
- Photo and Video
- Navigation and Maps
- Utilities and Tools
- Music
- Developer Tools
- Other
Additionally, there will be an alphabetical display mode that doesn’t use categories. These promising changes could soon be part of a stable Windows 11 update. It’s always great to have more viewing options to suit different preferences.
