Microsoft has released two special updates to fix a problem causing domain controllers (servers that manage user accounts and security settings in a network) to crash after installing the March 2024 Windows Server security updates.
The issue, initially reported by a tech news website called BleepingComputer, caused servers to freeze and unexpectedly restart due to a memory leak (gradual memory consumption leading to a shortage) in the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) process (a critical system process responsible for handling security-related tasks).
Critical updates to improve the stability of domain controllers with Windows Server
Microsoft has released special updates to deal with a memory problem in the LSASS process. This problem can cause servers to run out of memory and crash. The updates are for Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016, 2019, and 2022 servers.
To fix this issue, system administrators must download these updates from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install them on the affected domain controllers. If you installed updates before, you’ll only need the new updates for these packages.
The updates you need to download are:
As of now, Microsoft hasn’t mentioned any problems with the emergency updates they released. This is crucial for keeping server environments stable and secure, primarily since they’ve dealt with similar memory leak issues in December 2022 and March 2022.
Microsoft’s quick actions in addressing these incidents show how serious they are about keeping their operating systems reliable. Businesses need to have a dependable IT infrastructure. Meanwhile, Microsoft is getting ready to launch Windows Server 2025.
