Microsoft Resolves Windows 11 24H2 Update Issue—Without Actually Fixing It

In December, Microsoft acknowledged a known issue preventing users from installing new security updates or Patch Tuesday updates on Windows 11 24H2—but only if they had installed the OS using external media like a USB drive or CD. The problem affected users who attempted to update after installing the October 2024 Patch Tuesday (KB5044284) or November 2024 Patch Tuesday (KB5046617). Even those using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool ran into the same issue.

However, Microsoft clarified that the issue did not affect Windows Update or the Update Catalog installations.

Microsoft’s Workaround Becomes the Official “Fix”

At the time, Microsoft suggested a temporary workaround: avoid installing the October and November updates when setting up Windows 11 24H2. The company had promised to investigate further and provide a proper fix.

Microsoft has officially marked the issue as “resolved”—but not because it has been technically fixed. Instead, the previous workaround has been rebranded as the final resolution:

  • Workaround (before): Avoid installing Windows 11 24H2 with October or November updates. Instead, use installation media that includes the December 2024 security update (released December 10, 2024) or later.
  • Resolution (now): If your device encounters this issue, reinstall Windows 11 24H2 using media that includes the December 2024 update or later.

Did Microsoft Move On?

Given time constraints and other open issues, Microsoft may have decided that investigating and fixing the root cause wasn’t worth the effort. Instead of a technical solution, the company advises users to use updated installation media.

While this approach works, some users wonder whether Microsoft prioritizes quick resolutions over in-depth problem-solving.
