Microsoft has released a public preview for Windows MIDI Services, bringing MIDI 2.0 support to Windows 11. This update marks the most significant advancement in the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) since its inception in 1983, catching the attention of the Windows Insider community.
Microsoft Expands MIDI Support in Windows 11 with MIDI 2.0
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a communication protocol that enables seamless interaction between electronic musical instruments, computers, and other devices. It has been a cornerstone of modern music production, allowing for precise synchronization and control of multiple pieces of equipment.
Since its introduction in 1983, MIDI 1.0 has remained the industry standard. However, with the release of MIDI 2.0 in 2019, significant improvements have been made in speed, accuracy, and instrument control, enhancing how devices and music production software interact.
The new Windows MIDI Services adds MIDI 2.0 compatibility and ensures that MIDI 1.0 functions properly on ARM-based devices. This update is available in the latest Windows 11 Canary (Build 27788) preview.
While still in the experimental phase and not ready for a full release, Microsoft has emphasized that this update aims to deliver an “excellent experience for musicians” while laying a “solid foundation for future expansions and improvements.”
MIDI 2.0 Integration in Windows 11
The addition of MIDI 2.0 support in Windows 11 brings several key benefits, including:
- Faster data transmission speeds
- Higher resolution for controlling musical parameters
- More efficient, bidirectional communication between devices
These improvements make interactions between instruments and music production software smoother, more precise, and highly dynamic, marking a major leap forward in digital sound creation.
Other New Features in Windows 11 Canary
Beyond MIDI enhancements, the latest Windows 11 Canary build also introduces:
- Advanced OneDrive synchronization – Seamlessly work on files when switching between Windows 11 PCs, iOS, and Android devices.
- Modular game installation on the Microsoft Store – Download individual components for games like Call of Duty and Halo, optimizing storage and performance.
- Bug fixes and system optimizations – Various improvements for a smoother and more reliable Windows 11 experience.
With these updates, Microsoft continues to refine Windows 11, making it more powerful and efficient across various use cases.
