Netflix has announced that its app will soon stop functioning on older Apple devices that haven’t been updated to iOS 17. This change will affect models such as the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, iPhone X, first-generation iPad Pro, and fifth-generation iPad, which are still running iOS 16.
According to MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, these devices will no longer receive Netflix app updates. While an exact date for the end of support hasn’t been revealed, the app’s code hints that this shift is coming soon. Future app updates will only be available for devices running iOS 17 or later.
Netflix app will require iOS 17
Netflix will soon require iOS 17 or higher for its app to function properly. Devices that have not been updated to iOS 17 will no longer receive app updates, new features, or bug fixes. While users on these older devices can continue using the current version of the app, they will miss out on improvements and essential security updates.
As a temporary workaround, users can access Netflix through the Safari browser, but this may only be a short-term solution, as browser support could also be phased out in the future.
This move aligns with Apple’s practice of supporting iOS updates for around five years before older devices lose compatibility. As apps like Netflix need to stay up-to-date with security and new features, phasing out support for older operating systems has become a common industry trend.
