New Alexa will be equipped with AI Claude and should arrive in October

Amazon is gearing up to release a new version of its Alexa voice assistant, dubbed “Remarkable Alexa,” with advanced AI capabilities. Interestingly, this update won’t rely solely on Amazon’s in-house technology. According to sources from Reuters, the new Alexa will incorporate the AI model Claude, developed by the startup Anthropic.

This move signifies a notable change in Amazon’s approach. Traditionally, Amazon has focused on using its technology. Still, performance challenges with its AI model during internal testing have led the company to partner with an external provider for this upgrade. The inclusion of Claude’s AI is expected to enhance Alexa’s capabilities, potentially offering more sophisticated and responsive interactions for users.

Amazon is set to launch a new version of its Alexa voice assistant, named “Remarkable Alexa,” in October. This advanced version is expected to be available through a subscription model, with a monthly fee ranging from $5 to $10. Despite the introduction of this premium service, the current “Alexa Classic” will continue to be offered for free.

“Remarkable Alexa” is anticipated to bring several enhanced features, such as executing complex tasks from a single command, like composing and sending emails, and better integration with smart home devices.

The development of this new Alexa version has faced significant technical and bureaucratic hurdles. Initially, Amazon planned to use its in-house software for the upgrade. Still, the system encountered latency issues, sometimes taking up to six or seven seconds to respond to a command. This led Amazon to incorporate AI from Anthropic, particularly the Claude model, which has shown superior performance compared to Amazon’s internal models.

Last year, Amazon invested $4 billion in Anthropic, securing early access to its AI technologies. While Amazon hasn’t confirmed all the details, a spokesperson mentioned that the company uses a mix of its own and partners’ language models, including Amazon’s Titan model and Anthropic’s Claude, to deliver the best user experience.

The new version of Alexa is expected to be unveiled at Amazon’s annual devices and services event, typically held in September.
