Nintendo Poised to Ship 8 Million Switch 2 Units for Launch Window

By Aayush

The launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be massive, with analysts speaking to Bloomberg predicting that 6 to 8 million units will be available globally on June 5. If this projection holds true, it could mark the biggest console release in history.

Despite the large supply, demand is already surpassing expectations. In Japan alone, over 2.2 million people have registered interest in purchasing the new console from Nintendo.

Pre-orders officially opened in the U.S. and Canada on Thursday (24), and the rush of traffic temporarily overwhelmed major retailers like Best Buy and Walmart, causing noticeable website slowdowns. While exact sales numbers haven’t been shared yet, it’s worth noting that there were no widespread reports of stock shortages across social media.

Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan

While fans in the U.S. and Canada still have a chance to secure a Nintendo Switch 2, the situation in Japan is far more intense. Demand for the console has far exceeded supply, prompting Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa to address the issue publicly.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Furukawa acknowledged that many eager buyers may be left empty-handed at launch.

“A significant number of those who registered will not be selected,” he stated, referring to Japan’s lottery-style pre-order system.

The overwhelming interest in the console highlights just how high the anticipation is in Nintendo’s home country.

Nintendo Switch 2 challenges

Despite a few concerns, excitement around the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 remains high. However, pricing has sparked heated debates among fans, especially in countries like the United States, Canada, and Brazil.

In the U.S., the Switch 2 will retail for $449, making it the most expensive Nintendo console in over three decades. Meanwhile, Mario Kart World is launching at $80, $10 more than the typical price tag for major PlayStation and Xbox titles.

Another point of concern is the impact of U.S.-imposed tariffs on Chinese imports. While the base console’s price hasn’t been affected (for now), accessories are launching at higher-than-expected prices. And even the Switch 2 itself isn’t entirely safe—Nintendo has stated that it may consider a price adjustment in the future, depending on “market conditions.”
