Shanghai, China – Nissan is gearing up to boldly move in the competitive mid-size pickup truck market by unveiling the next-generation Frontier at the Shanghai Auto Show.
Currently lagging behind heavy-hitters like the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux, Nissan aims to shake things up with a fresh, futuristic take on its Frontier lineup. The new model stands out immediately thanks to its distinctive design, featuring a striking lighting setup that echoes the look of the latest Nissan Kicks.
But the real headline is what’s under the hood: the new Frontier will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain. While full technical specs are still under wraps, it’s expected to combine a 1.5L turbocharged combustion engine with an electric motor, delivering a combined output of around 400 horsepower.
Equally impressive is the promised driving range. Nissan claims the truck can travel up to 1,500 kilometers on a full charge and tank, with 135 km of pure electric driving based on the Chinese testing cycle.
This marks a major evolution for the Frontier, positioning it as a forward-looking, eco-conscious contender in a fiercely competitive segment.
When will the hybrid frontier be released?
Nissan has officially confirmed that the plug-in hybrid version of the Frontier will hit the market by the end of 2025, though its initial release will be limited to Japan.
The company plans to export the mid-size truck to other markets starting in April 2026, but it has not clarified whether Brazil will be included in the first wave of the global rollout.
