OpenAI launches ChatGPT Canva to edit AI-generated text and code

By Aayush

OpenAI introduced the Canva tool on Thursday (3rd), offering a new way to interact with ChatGPT for editing texts and code generated by the AI. Rather than relying on traditional chatbot conversations, users can now open a separate window to manage their files, with the AI assisting with various shortcuts.

This new experience is similar to platforms like Google Docs or Notion, but it integrates ChatGPT as a collaborator, powered by the GPT-4 Turbo model. ChatGPT can open the Canvas window automatically when it detects a task that would benefit from the feature, or users can manually activate it by typing the “use canvas” command in their prompt.

This enhancement offers a more interactive and efficient way to edit and collaborate using AI.

Canvas in text editing

The new Canva tool allows users to edit large blocks of text, such as drafting a blog post, with the option to select specific excerpts for AI review. ChatGPT can help identify grammatical errors, suggest thematic changes, or offer new ideas.

A key benefit is that users maintain creative control over the content while relying on ChatGPT for targeted adjustments and improvements. The tool also provides five handy shortcuts to streamline the editing process:

  • Suggest edits and feedback
  • Adjust text length, making it longer or shorter
  • Change the tone, adapting it for audiences like early childhood learners or university students
  • Check for clarity, consistency, and grammar
  • Add relevant emojis to enhance engagement

This combination of creative freedom and AI assistance makes content creation more efficient and flexible.

Canvas with programming

The new Canva tool is also highly useful for users who leverage ChatGPT to generate or analyze code. It allows users to ask the AI for explanations on coding decisions, assistance with fixing bugs, or suggestions for how to proceed with development.

The interface includes icons designed explicitly for coding tasks, such as:

  • Reviewing code
  • Adding logs
  • Commenting lines of code
  • Fixing bugs
  • Translating code into other programming languages, such as Java, JavaScript, C++, PHP, Python, and TypeScript

This makes the tool not only helpful for text editing but also an invaluable resource for developers seeking quick coding insights, bug fixes, and language translations.

Availability

The Canvas tool is now available in Beta to subscribers of the ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Team plans globally. OpenAI plans to roll out this feature to all users after the trial period concludes. According to the company’s data, ChatGPT currently reaches around 250 million users per week, and the Canvas tool is expected to enhance user experience significantly once fully released to this large audience
