Microsoft is discontinuing its Paint 3D app, a Windows tool with advanced editing features. The support for Paint 3D will end later this year, and it will be removed from the Microsoft Store on November 4, 2024, as announced on a support page listing discontinued operating system features. This means that after this date, no new installations or updates will be available for the app.
For users who already have Paint 3D installed, the app will remain accessible even after support ends. However, if uninstalled after the specified date, reinstallation from the Windows App Store will no longer be possible. Paint 3D comes pre-installed on Windows 10, but Windows 11 users need to download it from the Microsoft Store.
Meanwhile, the classic version of Microsoft Paint will continue to be available and will receive updates with new features, ensuring that users still have a reliable tool for basic image editing tasks.
In-app notice
Reports on X (formerly Twitter) indicate that users are seeing a banner in Paint 3D stating, “Paint 3D will no longer be available in the Microsoft Store or receive future updates starting November 4, 2024.” However, the banner did not appear during tests conducted by All Tech Nerd on Monday, December 12.
This suggests that the rollout of the notification might be gradual or dependent on certain conditions, leading to discrepancies in user experiences.
Alternatives to Paint 3D
Microsoft recommends using the Paint or Photos apps, both available natively in Windows 11, for viewing and editing 2D images. For accessing and viewing 3D files, Microsoft suggests using the 3D Viewer app, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.
