Paint Gets AI to remove and fill spaces in images

The latest Windows 11 test version introduces notable AI enhancements to Paint and Notepad. In Paint, you can now use AI to fill in empty areas or remove specific elements from photos, making editing more powerful and accessible.

Meanwhile, Notepad has received an AI-powered proofreader that can suggest improvements or rewrite selected portions of text, enhancing its utility for quick edits and polished writing.

AI in Paint to edit images

Paint has received two significant upgrades: Generative Fill and Generative Erase.

Generative Fill allows users to fill any selected area of an image with AI-generated elements. To use it, simply highlight the desired area, type a prompt, and let the software create the new addition. This feature, however, is exclusive to Copilot+ devices with Snapdragon processors.

On the other hand, Generative Erase is available for all Windows 11 users and works to remove specific elements from an image. By selecting the area with a brush, you can apply the change and let the AI handle the erasure.

These features boost Paint’s capabilities, moving it beyond its reputation as a basic editor and making it a stronger competitor to more advanced tools, like Adobe Photoshop, which also offers AI-powered filling tools.

Writing assistant in Notepad

Notepad now features a Rewrite function powered by generative AI, which allows users to edit and create text more effectively. This tool can rephrase sentences, adjust the tone, shorten or expand content, and even rewrite entire paragraphs.

This AI-powered rewrite function, already familiar in apps like Apple Notes and Google Docs, makes Notepad a more versatile editor. With each update, Microsoft is transforming Notepad into a more comprehensive tool, positioning it as a practical replacement for the now-retired WordPad.

These three new AI-powered features are currently exclusive to testers in the Windows Insider program, with plans for a wider public release in the coming months. The Rewrite feature in Notepad was initially rolled out in select regions, including Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
