Sony has announced that it will remove the 30th-anniversary PlayStation themes released for the PS5 in December. This removal will take place through an update scheduled for this Friday (31st).
On social media, the company clarified that the removal is only temporary and assured fans that the themes will return in the coming months. However, they did not specify a timeline for their return and confirmed that there are no plans to introduce new themes.
“Thank you very much for the fantastic reaction to the console themes for a limited time of PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PS4, which will be removed on Friday. Due to the positive response to the four themes, we have been working behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the coming months, ”says Sony No X (former Twitter).
These were the first and only themes ever released by Sony for the PS5, despite ongoing fan requests for the return of customizable themes—something that was a staple on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. However, these themes were introduced solely as part of the 30th-anniversary celebration of the original PlayStation and were always intended to be available for a limited time.
The collection included four themes, each paying tribute to a different PlayStation era: one for the PS1, featuring the iconic gray console; one for the PS2, inspired by its signature 3D blocks; one for the PS3, showcasing elements of the XMB interface; and one for the PS4, referencing the platform’s original theme.
The year 2025 for PS5 and Sony
Sony Interactive Entertainment kicked off the year with a major leadership change, announcing Hideaki Nishino as its new president. Previously serving as Co-CEO alongside Hermen Hulst, Nishino will now oversee all operations related to the PS5, the upcoming PS5 Pro, and the brand’s next big releases starting in 2025.
He steps into the role at a critical time, tasked with addressing the shortcomings of 2024. While Sony did release Astro Bot, which won “Game of the Year” at The Game Awards 2024, many fans were disappointed by the lack of major franchise launches throughout the year.
Adding to the challenges, Concord failed to make an impact, leading to the closure of Firewalk Studios and weakening PlayStation’s market presence. To maintain its dominance, the company will need to regain momentum. As of now, the confirmed PS5 titles for 2025 include Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, The Midnight Walk, and Ballad of Antara.
