PlayStation 5 totals 65.6 million units sold

Sony revealed on Friday, November 8th, that the PlayStation 5 sold 3.8 million units in the last quarter, ending in September 2024. This brings the total number of PS5 consoles sold to 65.6 million since its launch in 2020.

However, the sales for this quarter represent a decline compared to Q3 2023, with 1.1 million fewer consoles sold. This roughly 23% drop can be attributed to the lack of major exclusive game releases and the growing buzz around the rumored PS5 Pro. Many potential buyers may be holding off on purchasing the current PS5 in anticipation of the new model.

PlayStation Plus subscriptions and other statistics

While the number of PlayStation 5 consoles sold has decreased, the same cannot be said for the growth of PlayStation Plus subscribers. As of September 30, 2024, Sony reported 116 million active PS Plus users, a significant increase from 107 million in the same period in 2023. This means that in just one year, nine million more people subscribed to the service.

Sales of PlayStation 5 and PS4 games also saw a boost in the last quarter, with a combined total of 77.7 million units sold, compared to 67.6 million in Q3 2023. Of these, 5.3 million were first-party titles developed by Sony’s internal studios. Notably, 70% of these sales occurred through the digital PlayStation Store.

Sony also updated the sales figures for Astro Bot, which reached 1.5 million units sold by November 3, 2024. This milestone marks the game as a major success, and it continues to receive additional free content since its launch in September.
