PlayStation Hints at PS5 Pro Design Ahead of Announcement

On Thursday (5th), Sony confirmed the design of the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro. In a blog post and on social media celebrating PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, the company shared an artwork featuring the silhouette of the new console, which closely matches a recent leak.

The silhouette, resembling the sketch of the PlayStation 5 Pro leaked by Dealabs last week, shows a console with three distinct stripes in its central area and a shape similar to the current PS5 Slim.

Adding to the evidence, the PlayStation 5 Slim also appears in the anniversary image, suggesting that Sony is indeed previewing the PS5 Pro for the first time. A teaser on the brand’s Instagram Story with the phrase “Your first look” further hints at this being the initial reveal of the new console’s design.

When will the PlayStation 5 Pro be announced?

According to well-regarded leaker Lunatic Ignus, the PlayStation 5 Pro is set to be announced next week. In a Discord post, Ignus stated that Sony plans to reveal the console on Tuesday, September 10, or Wednesday, September 11. He also mentioned that a State of Play event dedicated to showcasing first-party games for the PS5 Pro could follow on September 19.

While Ignus is confident about the console reveal, he expressed uncertainty about the timing of the State of Play. He suggested that this event might be postponed and potentially take place at The Game Awards in December instead.

This speculation aligns with Sony’s recent celebrations of PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, during which the company promised “a lot of new things” in the coming weeks. Announcing the PS5 Pro now could generate significant excitement and set the stage for major events like the Tokyo Game Show at the end of September and The Game Awards later in the year.

How much will the PlayStation 5 Pro cost?

There’s also speculation about the price of the PlayStation 5 Pro. Analysts suggest that while the PlayStation 5 Slim may keep its current price, the PS5 Pro will likely be more expensive.

Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners points to rising component costs as a key factor, particularly for the SSD. Increasing prices for these components make the console more costly and reduce Sony’s profit margins.

In light of this, Serkan Toto of Kantan Games predicts that the PS5 Pro could be priced between $600 and $650 in the U.S., while the base PS5 model will remain current. Despite the higher cost, Toto believes the PS5 Pro will perform well in sales, much like the PlayStation 4 Pro, partly due to the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Set to launch between September and November 2025, GTA 6 could significantly drive sales for the PS5 Pro, especially if Sony secures temporary exclusivity. This potential aligns with Ignus’s rumors about a major “world premiere” Sony might announce during the State of Play on September 19.

What will the PlayStation 5 Pro look like?

If the rumors hold true, the PS5 Pro will offer up to 45% better performance than the original 2020 model, thanks to its new “Viola” SoC, custom-designed by AMD with an improved 6nm process from TSMC. This chip will stick with the Zen 2 microarchitecture, featuring 8 cores and 16 threads, but with a notable increase in frequency from 3.55 GHz to 3.85 GHz.

The PS5 Pro’s integrated GPU is set to see more significant upgrades. It will combine elements from both the RDNA3 and RDNA4 architectures. The shader engines and stream processors will use RDNA3 technology, while the ray tracing accelerators will utilize the newer RDNA4 architecture. This combination is expected to boost ray tracing performance up to three times.

Additionally, the PS5 Pro is rumored to come with 2 TB of SSD storage and 16 GB of RAM running at 18 Gbps—4 Gbps faster than the original PS5. It will also introduce PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This new upscaling system leverages artificial intelligence to deliver 4K visuals at 60 FPS for games marked with the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label.
