The American tech giant Qualcomm has clarified that its latest family of processors is here to stay. The strong support from most manufacturers, combined with the impressive performance we’ve witnessed on devices like the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11, underscores their capabilities. Qualcomm is reportedly developing the next iteration of its Snapdragon X Elite chips.
Glymur, the Icelandic code name chosen by Qualcomm for the Snapdragon
Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X Elite 2 processor, the SC8480XP model, has started appearing in various databases. Interestingly, the company has shifted its naming convention from Hawaiian islands to Icelandic names, opting for “Glymur” instead of the usual “Hamoa.” It’s unclear whether this change is intended to suggest that the processors will run cooler or if it’s merely a fresh branding strategy.
Initial tests for these new chips began around July and August, utilizing development boards to evaluate different NAND and RAM configurations before the components were integrated with the processor.
While we’ll have to wait until next year for more detailed information, it’s clear that Qualcomm is positioning itself as a strong competitor to Apple’s M-series chips, especially given their current performance in laptops. We hope to see these processors make their way into desktop computers soon.
Moreover, Qualcomm isn’t yet finished with its current generation. The database also mentions a new eight-core ARM processor called “X1P-24-100,” likely to be part of the Snapdragon X Plus series. This could indicate a more affordable entry point for PCs equipped with ARM CPUs, potentially driving down prices in the market.
