PS5 Pro Surprises with extremely high energy efficiency

By Aayush

Digital Foundry conducted in-depth tests on the PS5 Pro, revealing notable performance improvements paired with a slight increase in energy consumption. The findings highlight the new console’s ability to deliver higher performance while maintaining impressive energy efficiency.

Improved Performance in Games

In tests with Elden Ring running in “Quality Mode,” the PS5 Pro consistently hit frame rates above 50 FPS, with power usage between 228W and 230W. This marks a 30-35% performance improvement over the base PS5, which typically runs the game at 40 FPS, occasionally dropping to 30 FPS. The energy consumption of the base PS5 under similar conditions ranges between 215W and 218W, meaning the Pro’s power draw is only 5.5% higher.

Even though Elden Ring lacks specific enhancements for the PS5 Pro, the performance gains are significant. Similar results were observed with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, where the PS5 Pro consumed over 230W, compared to the base console’s 200W-216W.

The only title that pushed the PS5 Pro’s energy consumption noticeably higher was F1 2024, reaching 240W in “Quality Mode.”

The modest increase in energy consumption was expected, given the PS5 Pro’s upgraded GPU, PSSR technology, and CPU with a 10% higher clock speed. However, what stands out is the console’s ability to combine this enhanced hardware with strong energy efficiency.

In real-world terms, the PS5 Pro’s power usage is similar to that of the PS5 Slim, making it an excellent choice for gamers seeking higher performance without significantly impacting their energy bills. For those upgrading from the Slim model, the Pro offers a noticeable boost in performance while remaining relatively economical to operate.

PS5 Pro sales

While specific sales figures for the PlayStation 5 Pro remain undisclosed by Sony and market analysts, early market indicators suggest promising momentum. According to Circana’s industry analyst Mat Piscatella, the console’s U.S. performance mirrors the successful launch trajectory seen with its predecessor, the PlayStation 4 Pro, back in 2016.

Detailed sales data is expected to become available in the upcoming weeks. Notably, Sony has indicated that the premium pricing strategy hasn’t deterred consumers, with sales volumes meeting expectations despite the higher cost point. In the Brazilian market, where the console retails for R$6,999, the elevated price tag appears to have had minimal impact on consumer demand.
