In a post on the PlayStation Blog on Monday (9), Sony announced that it will host a special technical presentation on Tuesday (10) to discuss “innovations in gaming technology.” While Sony didn’t explicitly mention the PS5 Pro, the rising number of rumors suggesting an announcement this week strengthens the speculation that the upgraded console could be revealed during the event.
Another sign that a new version of the PlayStation 5 might be on the horizon is the fact that Mark Cerny, the lead architect of the PS5, will be heading the presentation. Cerny previously introduced the PS5 in March 2020 through a highly technical online conference, which detailed the console’s specifications and capabilities.
This time, Sony has teased a “9-minute technical presentation” focusing on the PS5 and innovations in gaming technology, once again led by Cerny, further fueling expectations around a potential PS5 Pro reveal.
What to expect from Sony’s presentation?
The anticipation surrounding Sony’s upcoming presentation suggests that Mark Cerny, the PS5’s architect, may unveil the long-rumored PS5 Pro, providing detailed insights into its technical specifications and features.
Recent rumors have pointed to significant improvements in the PS5 Pro, including enhanced upscaling and frame rates. The console is expected to offer up to 45% better performance compared to the original 2020 model, thanks to the inclusion of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a proprietary AI-powered upscaling technology aimed at delivering 4K visuals at 60 FPS.
The PS5 Pro is also rumored to feature a custom System on Chip (SoC) developed by AMD, codenamed “Viola,” which would be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 6nm process. This new SoC would retain the same 8-core, 16-thread architecture as the original PS5, but with an increased operating clock speed of 3.85GHz (up from 3.55GHz).
The integrated GPU is expected to combine elements from AMD’s RDNA3 and RDNA4 architectures, offering up to three times more ray tracing performance, which would greatly enhance photorealism in games. Additionally, the PS5 Pro will reportedly feature 16 GB of RAM at 18 Gbps, a 4 Gbps improvement over the original PS5, along with increased storage capacity—2 TB SSD compared to the PS5 Slim’s 1 TB.
While excitement is building for the PS5 Pro, some speculate that Sony may not announce the console just yet. Instead, they believe the presentation might focus on enhancements to the PlayStation 5’s backward compatibility features and improvements in game streaming through Remote Play.
How and where should Sony’s presentation be watched?
