Sony Says Price did not impact PS5 Pro sales

By Aayush

The PS5 Pro was officially launched last Thursday (November 7). Despite its higher price point, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s president, Hiroki Totoki, doesn’t see it as a significant drawback for the new console version.

Totoki believes that even if sales remain moderate, the PS5 Pro will continue to perform well, especially among the hardcore gaming audience. Addressing concerns about the pricing, he said, “In terms of pricing, there are mixed opinions, but we believe the value of the PS5 Pro is not negatively impacted. I don’t think it’s an issue.”

In the US, the PS5 Pro is priced at $599, but there haven’t been problems with low stock or an overwhelming surge in sales. This situation is notably different from the original PlayStation 5 launch in 2020, plagued by a global chip shortage, resulting in limited availability and distribution challenges worldwide.

With the launch of the PS5 Pro, these issues appear to have been avoided. Despite the console’s higher price and enhanced specifications, it hasn’t attracted widespread interest from the general public, suggesting it won’t face supply constraints this holiday season or into early 2025. Instead, Sony seems well-prepared to meet demand without the shortages seen in previous years.

Scalpers and the PS5 Pro

Scalpers, who typically buy up popular products in bulk to resell at inflated prices, have not had much impact on the PS5 Pro market so far. However, they have turned their attention to a different product: the disc drive accessory for the console.

In the U.S., the disc drive is normally priced at $79, but in markets like the United Kingdom, stock has already run out. As a result, the accessory is now being resold on platforms like eBay for anywhere between £150 and £250. This surge in resale prices highlights the increased demand and limited availability of the disc drive, making it a new target for scalpers.
